Magnus es, domine, et laudabilis valde: magna virtus tua, et sapientiae
tuae non est numerus. et laudare te vult homo, aliqua portio creaturae tuae,
et homo.
Circumferens mortalitem suam, circumferens testimonium peccati sui et
testimonium, quia.
- Stand the horse on level ground and place a 150mm long strip of
adhesive tape across the horse's spine at the start of the mane.
- Mark a piece of timber, or a spirit level, every 100mm as shown at
points 1 to 6.
- Hold the timber with mark 1 on the tape at the mane. Tape the horse's
spine directly below position 2 to 6. With the timber level, that is
parallel to the ground, measure the distance from the bottom edge of the
timber to the horse's spine at each taped position. As the withers should
be the highest point, the first measurement should be zero.
Check the measurements and record the information in a table like the one
shown below:

- Obtain a piece of light wire about 600mm long - light coat hangers are
good, and wrap a piece of tape around the center.
- At each of the pieces of tape on the horse's spine, mould the wire to
the shape of the horse's sides. Make sure that the horse is still standing
square on level ground and that the ends of the wire are hanging
vertically down the horse's sides.
- Carefully lift the bent wire by the center point so that it is just
off the horse's spine and then replace it to check the shape of the
horse's back. Adjust the wire if necessary.
- Draw center line on a piece of paper and carefully trace the
shape of the inside of the wire onto the paper with the center of the wire
aligned on the center line of the paper. Number each curve and make sure
that these numbers correspond to the numbers for the distance measured in
the table above.
- If you are using the Horse Measuring Form, make sure that the near
side and off-side of the wire on the correct side of the form. The grids
down each side will help in centering the wire.
- To check the symmetry of the horse, flip the wire over and lay it on
top of the line you have just drawn. If they are not similar, check the
line by re-measuring that shape on the horse. Some horses will show
different muscle development on each side.
- Repeat this process for all of the six numbered positions until
you have a drawing that looks like the one above on the right.
